Federal Judge Orders Texas School Districts to Remove Ten Commandments Displays Amid ACLU Lawsuit
federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction requiring multiple Texas public school districts to remove Ten Commandments displays from their classrooms by December 1, 2025. The order responds to a lawsuit filed in September by a coalition of multifaith and nonreligious families represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas and other advocacy groups. The families argue that the state law mandating the displays violates the U.S. Constitution’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits government endorsement of religion.U.S. District Judge Orlando L. Garcia ruled that displaying the TenCommandments in public school classrooms is unconstitutional under the current Texas law, Senate Bill 10 (S.B. 10). He emphasized the difficulty in preventing students from being subjected to unwelcome religious displays without blocking enforcement of the law in the named school districts. The injunction covers 14 districts that had installed or were preparing to install the posters despite an earlier ruling by another judge deeming the law unconstitutional. Story By Donnell Ballard
