DC residents are outraged over President Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard and take control of the city's police department. This move is part of a broader effort to address public safety concerns, but many residents and officials disagree with the approach.

Resident Reactions: - *Opposition*: Some residents, like Shelley Moskowitz and Diane Gronewold, are strongly opposed to the National Guard deployment, citing that it's unnecessary and meant to provoke conflict. They argue that crime rates are actually down in DC, with violent crime decreasing by nearly 30% in 2025 compared to last year. - *Support*: Others, like Sarah Kimble, welcome the increased police presence, citing concerns about safety and gun violence. Kimble, who has experienced homelessness, acknowledges the complexity of the issue and appreciates efforts to address it Official Response: - *Mayor Muriel Bowser*: Bowser has pushed back against Trump's claims of rising crime in DC, highlighting the city's declining violent crime rates. She has also expressed concern about the National Guard deployment, but acknowledges that it's ultimately the president's decision. - *Trump's Justification*: Trump claims that DC has been "overtaken by violent ga...

Students Serve Up Delicious Hits at A Taste of Arlington ISD event: By Office of Communication

Image
In this edition of Arlington Eats, we stopped by the annual A Taste of Arlington ISD event, where culinary students from across the district served up their own creations for the upcoming school menu. From lemon pepper chicken tenders to a beef kabob wrap crafted by a local restaurant alum, the tasting showcased flavors as diverse as the students themselves. The program, By Students 4 Students, began several years ago at Bowie High School and has since grown to include all six Arlington ISD high schools. Students work within school nutrition guidelines to design dishes their classmates will love, with some recipes created in partnership with local chefs and restaurants. “This is where we invite culinary students from the various high schools to showcase their recipes, which in turn we will feature on our school menus throughout the upcoming year,” said Food Service Director Leroy Claborn. “It gives them a chance to work in a commercial kitchen, network, and gain real-world skills.” ...

TRUMP WANTS HOMELESS OUT OF DC: "LEAVE IMMEDIATELY, WE'LL PROVIDE PLACES TO STAY FAR FROM THE CAPITAL"

Image
Donald Trump has sparked controversy with a statement urging homeless individuals to leave Washington, D.C. immediately, promising to provide alternative accommodations far from the capital. Trump's comments came via a post on his Truth Social platform, where he also vowed to jail criminals. According to Trump, "The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong." However, the feasibility and legality of such a plan remain unclear, particularly given the city's governance structure and the fact that Trump controls only federal land and buildings in D.C. Washington, D.C.'s mayor, Muriel Bowser, has pushed back against Trump's claims, stating that the city is "not experiencing a crime spike." In fact, according to the city's police department, violent crime has decreased by 26% in the first seven months of...

Philadelphia tutoring program focused on student literacy cut by DOGE

Image
Tyreek Wiggins struggled to read anything longer than three-letter words at the start of this school year. But with the help of his Joyful Readers tutor Kirra Silver, Tyreek — a third grader at Philadelphia’s Mastery Prep Elementary Charter School — quickly began gaining confidence. He mastered the challenging and sometimes conflicting “z” and “s” sounds and jumped six units ahead in his studies. Last week, dressed in a sharp grey suit and classic black fedora, Tyreek accepted a 2025 Young Reader of the Year award from the tutoring program to mark his accomplishments. He held his trophy high to a cheering crowd and triumphantly announced: “Reading is not my best skill, but I am improving.” Not long before that ceremony, however, David Weinstein, the founder of the Joyful Readers program, got some much less uplifting news. The group’s grant would be terminated effective immediately as part of the Trump administration’s sweeping cuts to AmeriCorps through the U.S. DOGE Service. Joy...

Big Tax Bill Passes — With Less ‘Beautiful’ Plan for National School Choice

Image
The House made no changes to the bill after the Senate passed it Tuesday, despite opposition from Republicans who thought it strayed too far from the version they passed in late May. Rep Keith Self of Texas posted on X that their original tax credit scholarship proposal would have created a national voucher program, while the Senate version “leaves blue state students in failing schools with ‘optional’ school choice.” He still voted for the bill, but two Republicans voted against it — Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who sponsored the school choice provision, said “enshrining the first ever federal school choice provision into our nation’s tax code is a major win. We will continue to advocate for and pass improvements moving forward.” The Senate on Tuesday passed the nation’s first federal tax credit scholarship program as part of a massive tax and spending bill President Donald Trump wants to sign by July 4....

Fat Joe Slams BET's Decision to Suspend Hip Hop Awards: 'This Is a Form of Gentrification'

Image
Fat Joe is speaking out about BET's decision to pause the Soul Train Awards and the BET Hip Hop Awards, calling it "a form of gentrification". The Bronx rapper and TV host believes the network's decision to suspend these awards shows is a result of the network's shift away from its roots in Black culture. According to Fat Joe, the downfall of BET's Black-focused programming began in 2001 when the network's founder, Robert Johnson, sold the company to Viacom for $3 billion. Since then, Fat Joe claims that "outspoken people started getting fired, budgets got smaller, and the soul of BET slowly started to fade Fat Joe also pointed out the disparity in production quality between BET's awards shows and other networks, citing the 2024 MTV VMAs as an example. He noted that the MTV VMAs had high-budget performances, such as Katy Perry's, while the BET Hip Hop Awards seemed to be underfunded. Key Points: - *Gentrification Concerns*: Fat Joe believes...
